When Fr. Mottet came back to Davenport in 1985, he found some Protestant ministers who were already meeting because factories had closed, thousands of jobs had been lost, and they were losing members. They had focused on charity and not on justice. Food baskets only help people for two or three days. Fr. Mottet brought in a skilled community organizer who “walked them through the fog.” What the organizer accomplished was amazing. When it started to work, they called Fr. Mottet “the wise man from the east.”
