Marv attended Catholic Central High School, a no-frills, all-boys school on the third floor of the former hospital. Basketball played an important part in his development. Memories of the State High School Basketball Tournament of 1956 were still fresh. As point guard and playmaker of his winning team, Marv used the tricks he learned from his coach, set up the plays, and didn’t care who put the ball through the hoop. He learned the value of community and teamwork at Catholic Central.

The influence of the priests and Sisters of the Humility of Mary nuns who taught at Central Catholic was overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to his Aunt Kathryn, he went from almost failing first grade to being valedictorian of his class.
While Fr. Mottet was in high school, he met Jeanne, “the most beautiful girl in town.” As president of his class, he was the one to crown her as homecoming queen. Fr. Broderick said they were the best dancers on the dance floor. By the time Marv graduated, he was a leader, and they were in love.
