Dorothy Day is sometimes considered the most important American Catholic. During the Depression, she sometimes stopped in Davenport when she travelled the Midwest. In 1972, Fr. Mottet knew she was passing through, and he arranged for her to receive the Pacem in Terris award. She is one of two awardees who is up for canonization. Fr. Mottet went to her funeral in New York. Her coffin was a homemade pine box, and the pallbearers were her granddaughters. A big candle was made from candle stubs collected in the neighborhood.
